Pay-per-click advertising on marketplaces is one of the fastest ways to grow visibility. It is also one of the fastest ways to spend money without results. The difference is almost always in management, not budget.
Start with the listing, not the ad
PPC sends traffic to a listing. If the listing is weak, the ad spend converts poorly regardless of how well the campaign is structured. Before meaningful ad spend, the listing should have solid images, clear copy, and competitive positioning.
Ads amplify what is already there. They do not fix a listing that does not convert.
Understand ACOS, but do not optimize it in isolation
Advertising Cost of Sale (ACOS) is the headline metric, but it is only part of the picture. A low ACOS on a low-visibility campaign is not the same as a healthy ACOS on a campaign driving real volume.
The metrics that matter together:
- ACOS for efficiency
- Conversion rate for listing quality
- Impression share for visibility
- Total sales for actual impact
Optimizing one metric in isolation usually pushes another in the wrong direction.
Structure campaigns by intent
Grouping keywords and products by intent makes campaigns easier to manage and optimize. Mixing brand terms, category terms, and competitor terms in one campaign makes it hard to see what is actually working.
A cleaner structure separates discovery campaigns (broad, category), defense campaigns (brand), and competitive campaigns (competitor terms). Each has a different expected performance.
Watch the long tail
The most expensive keywords are usually the most obvious ones. The long tail of specific, lower-volume terms often delivers better efficiency and adds up to meaningful sales. Campaigns that only chase the top terms miss this.
Review on a schedule, not constantly
PPC benefits from consistent review rather than constant adjustment. Checking too often leads to reacting to noise. Checking too rarely lets drift compound. A regular review cadence, with clear rules for what triggers a change, is more reliable than daily tinkering.
PPC is a tool, not a strategy. Used with discipline, it accelerates growth. Used without it, it accelerates spend.
